Our Founders and Instructors

In 1999 Michael and Lucy Beardwood founded Kumanomori Martial Arts.

Michael Beardwood, CD., 5th Dan Renshi

Shihan Michael Beardwood holds his 5th degree black belt and is the chief instructor of Kumanomori. He began studying karate in the Canadian military in 1986.
In addition to founding and directing the training at Kumanomori, he travels across Ontario and Canada assisting the head of Seiwa kai Canada, Isao Yabunaka, in conducting seminars
and training opportunities. He is also an official with Karate Ontario, officiating at provincial and national tournaments.

Lucy Gerritsen Beardwood, Hons. B.A., 4th Dan, Jokyo

Sensei Lucy Beardwood holds a 4th degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate and a Black Belt in Judo. She began practicing Judo in 1974, receiving her Shodan (black belt) in 1987.
She spent three months in Japan in 1984, training at the Kodokan, the world headquarters of Judo and represented Ontario in the Canadian Judo Championships in the 1980's.
She began her training in Karate in 1999, and received her 4th degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate in 2009. Sensei Lucy is the chief instructor of The Secret Dojo: our children's program.
